University of Illinois College of Education

College of Education
The School of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was founded in 1905. It was later renamed to College of Education in 1918. The college offers undergraduate, graduate, and online programs in areas including, but not limited to, elementary education, early childhood education, and Educational Organization and Leadership. There were originally six departments, three of them merged and formed the largest department in the college. All departments offer masters and doctoral degrees. However, only two departments offer undergraduate degree programs: Special Education and Curriculum & Instruction. The college also offers 16 online programs. Students seeking an undergraduate degree in the college must meet the minimum graduation requirement set forth by the university. To obtain a certification, students must also meet the requirements of the Council on Teacher Education, a professional educational administration at the University of Illinois.[1] The total enrollment is 1361 students as of 2011.[2] The College of Education is ranked #23 with the best graduate education program in the United States by U.S. News and World Report.

Dear Students of Fuyang Teachers College,

I am writing to let each of you know how excited I am about our upcoming visit to your college!  Thanks so much for hosting all of us visiting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

As an Assistant Dean in the College of Education here at Illinois, I am particularly interested in hearing about your experiences as an education major at Fuyang Teachers College.  I would like to know about the courses you take and about your practicum time spent working with children in the schools.

Please if you have a minute, send me an email telling me a bit about what it is like to be a student majoring in Education at Fuyang Teachers College.  I am interested in knowing the content of your classes and how you apply theory to practice; that is, how do you take what you learn in your classes and apply it when working with children in the local schools.  I would also like to know about other aspects of your college life like what activities you participate in on your campus.

I am looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you soon!

Sincerely,
Kathy Ryan

The Daily Illini, commonly known as the DI, is an independent, student-run newspaper that has been published for the community of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 1871. Weekday circulation during fall and spring semesters is 20,000; copies are distributed free at more than 250 locations throughout Champaign-Urbana.
The paper is published by Illini Media Company, a not-for-profit corporation which also prints other U of I publications, and also and operates WPGU 107.1 FM, a student-run radio station. While the IMC has no official ties to the university, university professors and others in the academic community serve on its board of directors. The newspaper's staff has both full-time professionals and amateur students.
The paper is printed as a broadsheet, but downsizes during the summer months as a tabloid.
The Daily Illini's history is replete with staffers who have gone on to prominent careers in journalism. However, in recent years, the quality of some of the paper's work has caused it to become embroiled in controversy.

Lucinda and Kathy,

Here's a draft list of local K-12 public and private schools your American students
can visit with their Chinese student guides from the Fuyang Teachers College.

Other possible activities to spend this late afternoon/evening include:
shopping downtown (with a Walmart) or at the nearby RT-Mart /
Ruili Shopping Center (with Prada and Gucci stores),
going together to a nice restaurant, visiting student dorms,
and/or visiting the homes of students who are Fuyang natives

Looking forward to your visit!

Hi Ray,

... I think if we do simple dinner with the students, that would be great.  If we could do dinner at some of the Fuyang students' homes (with their families), that would be fantastic, as I know the Illinois group would love the experience to visit a family and their home.  We would be happy to divide the Illinois students into smaller groups to make this more manageable.  I know they are also very much interested in visiting the dorms of the students.

Thanks again--looking forward to our visit Saturday evening.

Kind Regards,
Lucinda

tomorrow's visit to Fuyang

Friday, January 4, 2013 9:42 PM
Lucinda,

I believe we now have three local students that can invite your students home for dinner. Maybe more. Trips to the dorms should be easy, too.

Unfortunately, some of the students whose photos are on the Word list are now overwhelmed studying for their finals.  Let's see how many students show up.

Interesting option: One of my past years' Muslim students said he could take several of your students to the local mosque. My first year here three of us foreign teachers visited, and Greg and I went there in September.

The trip to the alleys at the north gate of the school has an art studio (that has sketched me), a small math tutoring center (run by an entrepreneurial recently-graduated math major, and a review school for middle school students (where I've taught several English classes).  This could be a quick and probably very interesting trip for those with the energy.

But you're likely still not over the jet lag, and tomorrow's daytime program will likely be already very rich.  We'll play it by ear.

..,
